About me
I am a nature inspired Integrative Yoga Therapist. I approach healing not just from the physical, but also from the more subtle layers of what it means to be human. I am a teacher by nature and by training. My approach to healing starts with self-awareness, transformation and wholeness. My wish is to make yoga accessible to all.
I believe the conditions for joy and purpose in life already exist in each of us. Our work together incorporates the principles of yoga to unlock that potential and allow your luminous self to freedom.
Qualifications
I am a certified yoga therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapists and an E-RYT 500 hour Yoga Alliance certified group yoga instructor. I have been studying and practicing yoga for over 20 years. For me, yoga has proven to be a path to greater self-awareness and healing. It is an honor to be able to share the tools of yoga and its benefits with others. I also hold a Master’s Degree in Secondary Language Acquisition and Curriculum Development from George Mason University and a B.A. in English and Education from the University of Vermont with years of experience teaching adult English Language Learners. I am the mother to two amazing humans.
An Ayurvedic Approach
“Go outside and play” was the motto in my childhood home, and so I did. The forest helped me develop my sense of wonder and danger, and it taught me to trust my intuition. In nature I discovered the natural rhythms of life and its cycles and intuitively leaned in and let that wisdom guide me. It landed me on the path to Yoga and Ayurveda. In the forest, I feel connected to something greater than myself and have made it a practice to spend as much time in nature as possible.
Ayurveda is the ancient practice of living in sync with nature based on the constitution of the individual’s body as represented by the three doshas (VATA, PITTA, KAPHA). A dosha assessment offers the individual a perspective for how they relate to life based on the expression of their DNA. Ayurveda offers lifestyle, diet and stress management tools to support a life of harmony and balance and prevent dis-ease.
Now I guide others on their journey to well-being and to trusting their own deep-knowing. By spending time in nature, we can reconnect with our own true nature and with that of the whole. Through movement, deep listening and practices of self awareness, you become your own medicine.
Yoga Bio
Emily began practicing yoga in 2001 at Integral Yoga Institute in Manhattan under the teachings of Swami Satchidananda. Immediately she felt more connected, peaceful and resilient and continued to practice many different types of yoga in many settings. Wanting to deepen her understanding of the process that was happening both on and off the mat as a result of yoga, she enrolled in teacher training. Emily is a RYT-500 hour Yoga Alliance Certified Yoga Instructor and a C-IAYT Yoga Therapist.
Yoga continues to help Emily see life with clarity and enables her to remain an observer in the midst of a hectic life. Yoga helps her let go and let the change come, to bend and not break.
Emily is inspired and humbled every time she teaches yoga. She loves to see the courage it takes to be on the mat and fully present, and the compassion it takes to be exactly where you are and how you are. Emily’s classes cultivate self-awareness by encouraging her students to step into the powerful position of the observer, which allows us to remain calm and neutral, acting rather than reacting in our life. Emily’s intention as a teacher is to inspire and guide students in a compassionate and nurturing environment in hopes of spreading more light in the world.
Emily believes yoga is the path to greater self-awareness and healing. She is honored to share yoga and its benefits with others. She also loves hiking, having bonfires, knitting, reading, and finding the sacred in the mundane.
